Lesson Overview:

  • The reading passage discusses changes in the traditional (nuclear) family structure, summarizes some social trends related to marriage and childbirth in the U.S. and globally, and mentions some reproductive technology.
  • The lesson also includes a focus on the names of different relatives, a list of family-related scenarios for discussion, two role-plays, a debate on arranged marriage,  and a 'family meeting' speaking activity.
  • All lessons come with warm-up questions, comprehension questions, a vocabulary section, and discussion questions.

Warm-up (Pair Work)

  • Where is the best place to raise a family (e.g. apartment, village, etc.)?
  • What was the worst thing you did as a child? Did your parents catch you?
  • Is there anything funny or different about your family?
  • Do you know your family tree? How far back do you know your family history?

Follow-up question answers

  • The nuclear family is now less common. Though it is not stated in the passage, today often both parents work in the West. There are other family types today such as those led by same-sex parents.
  • An extended family is the family including other relatives such as grandparents, aunts, or uncles.
  • The author does this to question the conclusion that love-marriages are less likely to lead to divorce than arranged-marriages.
  • A boomerang child is one who returns home to live with his parents in adulthood.
  • They are having difficulty managing aging population. This is effected by low fertility rates.

    I thinks, This information is very important. The families learn about some words because it isn’t use.
