Animal Habitats Worksheet (Beginner ESL/EFL)

Worksheet for Teaching Animal Habitats to Beginner ESL/EFL Students

Level: Beginner to Lower-Intermediate

Download: animal-habitats-worksheet.doc

Target Language: "Bears live in the forest."

Worksheet Description

This is an animal habitats worksheet I created for the grade 3 & 4 students at the Japanese school I teach at. I use it as part of the unit I teach on animals. After teaching animal names and habitats using flash cards, I use this worksheet to give them some writing practice and to reinforce the target language "(animal) live in the (habitat)".

Beware: there is no official answer key! For me, monkeys live in the jungle, zebras live in the plains, foxes live in the forest, sharks live in the sea, snakes live in the desert, and goats live in the mountains. Of course, this is all debatable, and many animals live in multiple habitats. Be accepting; ask your students to think about it and put what they think is right. Or, if you want all the answers to be clear, then modify the worksheet. However, this might require adding different animals (like camels and yaks).

As a note, if you are teaching animals, you could also use this worksheet for teaching simple adjectives to describe animals.

Key language:

Animals: monkeys, zebras, foxes, sharks, snakes, goats

Habitats: the desert, the forest, the mountains, the sea, the jungle, the plains

Note: I do not hold the copyright to the animal images on the worksheet; they were obtained by searching for clip-art on Google images.

Enjoy the worksheet.

In my elementary school class, the students and I reached agreement that zebras live in the plains. This may not be true in all cases, as you argue. The worksheet is a .doc, so feel free to open and edit it to your liking.

The file is in .doc format. To open a file you always need a program. I’m not sure why you are surprised.
