Lesson Overview:
- After warm-up questions, students read and discuss a 224-word passage that summarizes 12 news stories from 2024. The stories focus on politics, war, entertainment, etc. Each story contains a cloze (blank) that students must try to fill in with their own knowledge.
- The passage is followed by comprehension questions and a list of 12 vocabulary items that students should match to their corresponding definitions.
- After pronunciation practice, students use some of the new vocabulary in to complete discussion questions.
- The lesson has three debate topics covering AI and Bitcoin.
- The lesson's roleplay is a debate between two politicians debating a ban of TikTok.
- The next speaking activity has students select two global issues and present their arguments as to why these issues should be priorities for the next year, and what solutions may be relevant to them.
- Finally, students review vocabulary, collocations, and then ask each other some final discussion questions.

- What are your plans for 2025?
- How is New Years celebrated in your culture?
Brainstorm: In pairs or groups, make a list of the major events of 2024. Include local, national, and international news. When finished, present your list to the class and discuss them as a group.
