Lesson Overview:
- Students first warm up with questions on science and creation.
- The lesson's input is a 336-word reading passage that summarizes a new study entitled Maximum Lifetime of the Vegetative Biosphere, which aims to predict how much time remains for complex life on Earth. The paper models two scenarios in which complex plant life (and human life) dies in approximately 1.8 billion years. The passage also touches on possible techno-solutions that enable life to survive.
- The passage is followed by comprehension questions.

It would be a problem for Earth because the Sun will likely expand enough to swallow Earth in approximately 5 billion years. However, by this point life on Earth will already have ended long before due to CO₂ depletion or extreme heat.
- Previous studies predicted that complex life would end sooner — in under 1 billion years. The new study extends that estimate to approximately 1.8 billion years, which is considerably longer than previously believed.
- In Outcome #1 (strong weathering), Earth's natural cooling process works effectively, keeping temperatures stable but gradually depleting CO₂ until plants die. In Outcome #2 (weak weathering), the cooling process is too weak, so temperatures rise to levels that kill plant life instead.
