Expanded Lesson with Speaking Activities: join-ice-jesse-welles-upper-intermediate-012026.docx (1.5 hr)
Notes:
- These two resources are based on Jesse Welles's song Join ICE, which you can listen to here. The shorter worksheet is for teachers looking to focus on listening and vocabulary only. The expanded lesson has an additional page of speaking activities.
- Having recently written full-length lessons on teenage boys tracking ICE officers in their neighbourhood, I didn't feel the need to make another extended lesson on the topic.
- The lessons can be previewed below. You can download them in Word format from the links above.
- Bias alert: The song is a satire of ICE officers, portraying them negatively. Please ensure that this political view is something your students can accept as a discussion topic.

Background: I.C.E. stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. ICE officers work for the government and arrest people who have immigrated illegally to the United States. Recently, many cities are protesting against ICE officers working in their communities. There have also been reports of ICE agents arresting and, in some cases, killing American citizens.
Listening: Watch Jesse Welles perform the song “Join ICE” on The Late Night Show. As you listen, try to fill in the missing words.
