ESL/EFL Level: Advanced (C1/C2)
Lesson Topics: travel, tourism
Skill Focus: Listening, Reading, Speaking, Vocabulary
Approximate Class Time: 2.25 hours
Lesson Plan Download: travel-destinations-2026-advanced-052026.docx
Lesson Overview:

  • Students first warm up with questions about holidays and travel.
  • This lesson contains both a video clip and a passage. Students first watch a short (1:36m) clip from Bloomberg featuring their Top Destinations for 2026. As students watch the video, they take notes about each destination. Afterward, so students can learn more about each of the five destinations, they read short paragraphs with more details about each.
  • The video and passage are followed by comprehension and follow-up questions.
  • Next, students review phrases from the video and match key vocabulary to definitions. Once complete, students use some of the new vocabulary to complete discussion questions.
  • After a debate prompt on the social media's effect on tourism, students imagine they are travel bloggers and then complete an itinerary planning activity that requires them to chart an itinerary (on a map) for a holiday.
  • Next, students attempt to guess the top tourist destinations of 2024 according to the World Tourism Rankings.
  • As roleplay activities, students first debate the pros and cons of tourism as residents of Corsica. Next, they deal with a situation at a boutique hotel.
  • After two famous quotations about travel, students then review vocabulary and the lesson's collocations.
  • Finally, the lesson ends with a few final discussion questions.
