Note: This lesson does not contain a easy-to-reference step-by-step guide to CPR (in this lesson, the students have to put the steps in order by themselves). If your students want an ordered list of CPR instructions they can put on their office wall, print one from a source such as https://www.mayoclinic.org/first-aid/first-aid-cpr/basics/art-20056600
Disclaimer: This lesson plan was designed to teach English vocabulary. It is NOT an official source of information on CPR and therefore should not be considered a substitute for real first-aid training.
CPR ESL Lesson Plan: Warm-up (Pair Work)
1. Do you have any experience giving or receiving CPR? 2. Have you ever helped save someone's life? 3. Have you been trained in CPR? Should basic CPR training be mandatory for everyone? 4. Would you be willing to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a homeless person? 5. In what emergency situation(s) is CPR necessary? When is it unnecessary?
CPR ESL Lesson Plan: Steps of CPR
Situation: Your friend is having a cardiac arrest. He is lying on the ground. He is not breathing. What do you do? Put the below steps in order, starting with Stage 1.
Stage 1: Restoring Circulation
1.___
2.___
3.___
4.___
5.___
6.___
a. Repeatedly compress his chest (at least 5 centimeters) at a rate of approximately 100 compressions a minute.
b. Lay your friend on his back on a firm surface.
c. Kneel next to his neck and shoulders.
d. Continue compressions until there are signs of movement or medical personnel arrive. If you have been trained in CPR, go on to checking the airway and rescue breathing.
e. Call emergency medical services.
f. Place the heel of one hand over the center of his chest, between the nipples. Put your other hand on top of the first hand. Lock your elbows, with your shoulders directly above your hands.
Stage 2: Clearing the Airway(only if you are trained in CPR and after 30 compressions)
7.___
8.___
g. Check for normal breathing by watching his chest, listening for breaths, and feeling for breath against your cheek and ear. Gasping is not considered normal breathing. If he is not breathing normally and you have CPR training, begin mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. (If you lack the training, continue with compressions).
h. Place your palm on your friend's forehead and gently tilt the head back. Using your other hand, pull his chin forward to open the airway.
Stage 3: Breathing (mouth to mouth or mouse to nose if mouth is injured)
9. __
10.__
11.__
12.__
i. Pinch your friend's nostrils shut. Cover his mouth with yours, forming a seal.
j. Continue CPR until your friend becomes responsive or emergency personnel arrive.
k. Give the first breath (lasting 1 second) and check to see if his chest rises. If so, give a second breath. If not, do the head-tilt chin-lift maneuver again and deliver a second breath. After the two breaths, give another thirty chest compressions (2 breaths + 30 compressions = 1 cycle)
l. After five cycles (roughly two minutes), if he is still unresponsive, you may use an automatic external defibrillator (AED). Give one shock, resume CPR (starting with compressions) for two minutes, and then give the second shock. If an AED is not available, go to the last step.

I had two hearg attacks within the last ten years. The first one was a triple bypass. The second was a stent was put in me. I was a CPR Instructor long time ago for the Red Cross. Knowing CPR is a very important thing to know in case of emergencies.
