Lesson Overview:

  • After warm-up questions, students do a vocabulary pre-viewing activity to help them understand the following video.
  • The YouTube video, by TODAY News, is three minutes but you should stop at the weather report at 2:20. It describes Neuralink's first brain implant on a human being for the initial purpose of enhancing the lives of paraplegics.
  • Next, after a listen, recall, retell activity, students complete comprehension questions, a vocabulary-matching exercise, and an activity where they make questions using the target vocabulary.
  • After a debate on either whether Brain-Computer-Interfaces (BCIs) should be developed or the topic of animal testing.
  • This is followed by a discussion of humanity's biggest technological breakthroughs and a debate on which has been the most significant.
  • This is followed by a three-step speaking activity related to a BCI that wipes all of your memory. In the end, in pairs, students roleplay to recreate the identity of a student who has lost all their memories.
  • The lesson ends with collocations, a final vocabulary review, and final discussion questions.
