Lesson Overview:

  • After warm-up questions, students preview ten terms used in a three-minute NBC News video about OpenAI's new tool, Sora. After matching vocabulary to definitions, students watch the video on YouTube. The video is at a C1 English level and the speakers have an American accent.
  • After a listen, recall, retell activity, students complete comprehension questions, a vocabulary-matching exercise, and an activity where they make questions using the target vocabulary.
  • As a unique feature, the lesson offers a review of the pronunciation of words ending in the -ate sound.
  • There are two debate topics about Sora students can choose from. After, there are two roleplay activities. The first is a courtroom scenario, where lawyers of DreamWorks' Animation studio face off against OpenAI. The second scenario is a more playful situation about a fictional president having an affair and the reliability of video evidence in the modern age.
  • The next speaking activity has students consider a list of potential future inventions and discuss which they think are likely to be created. Next, students work in groups to design a commercial using Sora for a gum brand.
  • As usual, the lesson has a few famous quotations and then a review of vocabulary and collocations before presenting some final discussion questions.
