Tastes Worksheet (ESL/EFL)
ESL Level: Beginner / Elementary
This is a basic ESL worksheet I made for my grade 3 & 4 students. Feel free to download and edit it.
ESL Worksheet Instructions:
Use it however you want. In my class, I put the students in pairs and then had them write in foods that were sweet, sour, etc in the blank space next to the taste. Since it's difficult to spell many food names, this activity is good practice for "How do you spell (food item -- e.g. chocolate)?" and writing the alphabet. After they wrote two or three items beside each taste, I had them look at their sheet and present two sentences to the class (e.g. "Popcorn is salty / Grapefruit is sour.").
That's all. With tastes, there are many kinds of dialogues and food-related activities you can do. For example
- A: How are you?
- B: I'm hungry.
- A: Here you are (giving the student a flashcard with food on it, e.g. a strawberry)
- B: Oh, it's sweet. Thank you...
Et cetera. Good luck.

How can i teach about 5 tastes to beginner ESL stutents who even dont know what the word “taste” is?
Teach them the names of food first. Then act out eating the food (e.g. a lemon). Make a ‘sour’ face. This will show them the meaning of sour. Then do the same with other foods.
Thank you so much. It will be so helpful.
