Lesson Overview:

  • Background: This lesson is based on a longer thread of 25 significant charts that display trends neglected by the media. I've widdled down the list from 25 to eight, and then broken the eight charts into two separate lessons. This is lesson #2.
  • After warm-up questions, the lesson introduces four charts about rising costs (inflation), obesity rates, the lack of friendship among people today, and the migration of millionaires. Each chart is accompanied with discussion questions.
  • Afterward, as a focus on vocabulary, students hunt for four C1/C2 level words found in the aforementioned sections.
  • For speaking activities, there are roleplays about migrating to a developed country and helping a friendless brother. There is also a panel on obesity on a talk show.
  • For listening, the lesson includes a short (2:51 min.) video about Ozempic along with comprehension and vocabulary questions and a debate scenario.
  • Related to inflation, the lesson links to two activities related to financial planning/budgeting. Please preview these beforehand to determine if you want to fit them into your class.
  • The lesson wraps up with a vocabulary and collocation review and some famous quotations.
  • Notes: 1) If you plan to print the lesson, please use color for the charts. Otherwise, some data will be hard to identify, 2) Preview the external links to the Budgeting Activities on page five to determine if you want to use them.
