Lesson Overview:

  • After warm-up activities, students read a short passage about a Canadian family that traveled the world for a year with their children after learning that three of their kids would eventually go blind. After a listen, recall, retell activity,  students complete follow-up questions, match vocabulary to definitions and then create discussion questions.
  • Next, students brainstorm their bucket lists and then suggest some travel plans for a trip around the world and a trip to their home country.
  • Then students complete an activity related to each of the five senses and participate in two roleplay situations about holiday plans.
  • Finally, the lesson ends with two famous quotations about travel and a review of collocations and discussion questions.

 Possible answers to comprehension questions:

  1. Their children are going to go blind. Therefore, the parents wanted to fill their heads with visual memories while they still had their eyesight.
  2. It means the bond between the members of the family grew stronger; they got to know each other better and became closer.
  3. They were surprised by how easily their children were able to make friends with other kids on their trip even though they did not share a common language.
  4. They learned how to adapt to different circumstances. This will be important for them because they will soon have to adapt to life without sight.
